Here's a fun one for the whole family. Ivins City Parks & Recreation is hosting its Halloween Bash on Friday, October 30, starting at 6:00 p.m. at Ivins City Heritage Park, 100 N 100 W. The city lists the event as free, and its program page notes that no pre-registration is needed.
What's on the schedule
- 6:00 p.m. – Pizza and carnival games
- 6:30 p.m. – Costume parade
- 7:00 p.m. – Painted pumpkin contest
- 7:30 p.m. – Winners announced
For the pumpkin contest, the idea is to paint your pumpkin at home and bring it with you to enter. The city says the contest is open to everyone, with judging categories for ages 12 and under and 12 and up. The contest rules are posted at ivinsutah.gov, so take a quick look before you start painting.
Bingo in the Park keeps the fun going
If you can't make it Friday, Ivins City's free Bingo in the Park runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 to 5:45 p.m. at the Heritage Park West Pavilion through November 12. According to the October newsletter, regular prize bingo runs from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m., followed by a grand prize round. Parks & Recreation also says Thursday, November 5 will feature “even BIGGER prizes and a hot chocolate bar thanks to some great Utah Tech students!”
A little Ivins Halloween history
The Ivins Historical Society shared some old-time Halloween memories in the same newsletter. Verlene Tobler, born in 1921, remembered: “On Halloween we never went trick or treating, but just went from house to house in our costumes to ‘scare’ people, supposedly.” Emma Hafen Fife recalled that adults would ask children to recite a poem or rhyme, tell a story or sing a song before handing out homemade treats or sometimes coins.
Why it matters here
Simple, free get-togethers at a neighborhood park, with kids in costumes and neighbors catching up, are a big part of what makes living in Ivins special. It's fun to see traditions that go back generations still bringing people together.
