Here's a story that made me smile. ABC4 Utah reported on October 20 that a group of local kids is working to bring an Ivins neighborhood park back to life. Back in 2022, a fire spread through Mojave Estates Park on south Main Street, and ABC4 notes it left little behind beyond some grass, wood chips and a set of monkey bars.

A park plan led by students

According to Ivins Inspired, the effort is being led by students from the Up & Atom homeschool co-op, who started imagining what the space could become. The Ivins City May 2026 newsletter, in an article by Sharon Gillespie, explains that the co-op, led by Lauren Christensen, had been using the park as an outdoor classroom for about five years, and that the students described what was left as “a lonely set of monkey bars.” Now they are acting as project managers for what the newsletter calls The Park on Main.

The newsletter describes a multigenerational gathering space with four main pieces: room for youth-run businesses, farm stands and pop-up markets; interactive public art, including a “Unity” mural; a shaded amphitheater and garden space for classes and conversation; and inclusive play equipment to replace what was lost in the fire. The students have also worked with the city's Parks and Recreation team to learn about playground safety, accessibility and water-wise landscaping.

How to get involved

Ivins Inspired, which supports the students as they work with Ivins City and community partners, invites residents to a Holiday Youth Market at the park on Saturday, November 21. Local youth will sell handmade goods, food and holiday items, and visitors can learn more about the plans and share their own ideas. Check the Ivins Inspired project page for updates before you go.

Why it matters here

Neighbors, young and old, rolling up their sleeves to make a shared space better is a big part of what makes living in Ivins special. It's wonderful to see the next generation of Ivins residents taking the lead.
