If you’ve been to a city event in Ivins lately, there’s a good chance a member of the Ivins Youth Council helped make it happen. This group of local high school students has had a busy fall, and the council’s own updates show how much they’re putting back into town.

A report to the City Council

At the Ivins City Council meeting on Oct. 15, three Youth Council leaders gave a presentation on the group’s community involvement, “from the Easter Egg Scramble and Summer Foam Blast to Heritage Days,” according to the council’s post. The Youth Council says the trio “earned enthusiastic applause from a packed City Council chamber.”

A project for Unity Park

During that presentation, the students also shared their Community Impact Challenge: a plan for adjustable basketball hoops at Unity Park, aimed at making a real difference for Ivins youth. The Youth Council says more details are coming, so it’s one to watch.

Meeting neighbors at Ivins IQ

On Oct. 21, three members represented the council at Ivins IQ, a city program that helps residents learn how Ivins works and how to get involved. According to the Youth Council, they answered questions and shared their projects, and what they heard most often was praise from residents for the job the group is doing.

Halloween Bash, rain and all

The council’s volunteers also pitched in at the city’s Halloween Bash at Heritage Park on Friday, Oct. 30. They ran the pumpkin painting activities and judged the painted pumpkin contest, and the Youth Council’s thank-you post notes they kept things going “IN THE POURING RAIN!” (We previewed the event in our Halloween Bash post.)

Why it matters for Ivins

Teenagers who give their evenings to pumpkin contests, park projects and city meetings are part of what makes living in Ivins special. It’s a small-town kind of pride, and it shows up at nearly every community event.

Great work, Youth Council.
